There are two types of power adapters: desktop and wall-plug. The wall-plug power adapter is a power adapter that can be directly plugged into a board or socket. The desktop power adapter is the power adapter that needs to be placed on the desktop. Another difference between the desktop power adapter and the wall-plug power adapter is that the desktop power adapter needs to be connected to the mains (alternating current) by an AC line.
Power adapters are widely used in security products, communication products, small household appliances and consumer electronics products, especially in portable consumer electronics and communication products, generally within 10W, such as smartphones and tablets generally use 5- 10W power adapter is used for power supply, while computer peripherals, security products, and small household appliances generally use power adapters below 36W. Especially in today's energy-saving and environmental protection, products in this power range are the most common. Notebooks, TVs and other products generally use power adapters below 120W, while those larger than 100W mostly use built-in power supplies. However, there are also external power adapters below 200W, but the number is relatively small.
Generally, wall-plug power adapters are used below 36W. The characteristic of this power adapter is that it does not require AC wires, which saves cost and saves space, and does not require a table or space for placing the power supply. It is also safer to plug directly into the plugboard. There are a few power adapters below 36W that are desktop-style. This is generally because the product is far away from the AC plugboard or because the power adapter is large in size, heavy in weight, and has multiple ports. The USB power adapter, in order to avoid the situation of unstable insertion due to the use of too many USB products inserted on it. However, power adapters larger than 36W are not suitable for wall-plugging, because their volume and weight are relatively large, so desktop-type power adapters above 36W are generally used.
With the development of science and technology, as well as the increasingly tense energy and higher energy efficiency requirements, consumer electronics products have requirements for power adapters with high efficiency and wide input voltage range, as well as the increase in copper, iron and labor costs. Transformers are mostly gradually replaced by switching power adapters and become one of the indispensable accessories for many products.
